Poker Strategy
No matter the type of poker game you are playing, whether it is video poker, Texas hold ‘em, Carribean style poker, Five card or Seven card stud, then you need a good strategy to win…especially if is a game with no limits on the amount of money that one can bet.
One of the best poker strategies is simply this…DO YOUR OWN THINKING!
A big mistake that people seem to want to make is to follow really strict guidelines when they play poker. A lot of people treat poker like Blackjack, a game where there is a primary strategy in every situation.
With poker this just cannot be the case. All the advice given is merely a general outline of hints that can never take the place of really good situational judgment skills. Poker is a game of people and of situations. It is NOT a game of pre-planned strategy. All of the really good high-stakes poker players will vary their game strategy and make necessary decisions on the spot. Poker players that rely on hard and fast inflexible strategies are doomed to fail because it is easy to predict how they will play, and they do not take into account many of the situational factors poker entails.
The best way to learn situational judgment skills is to practice and pay attention to your playing flaws. Playing free online poker is a good way to learn how to judge your opponents and how to compensate when playing against a variety of opponents. Some, but not all, online poker rooms will show the hands of the losing players who called a showdown. This can help you get an idea of how often you correctly judge, or how often you misjudge, your opponents.
If you are going to play poker, you have to have confidence in yourself. You have to think for yourself. Don't worry about whether or not your game might be violating textbook guidelines…that does not matter at all. A winning poker player combines general poker knowledge with situational judgment skills. Poker players who are always losing are not thinking for themselves or aren’t thinking at all.
Remember that there are no hard and fast strategies for playing poker. Learning every type of opponent you may play against, since there are a few basic types of poker players, and the variations of styles that they may play will enable you to become a pro poker player. Who knows? Maybe one day you can play in a major Texas Poker tournament.
