Poker Rules

The type of poker game you are playing will always dictate the rules that you are playing by. Lets look at a few of the basic rules of poker.

Omaha poker is a variation on the game of Texas hold'em poker. It has become a very popular and is a rather complex game. Each player is dealt four cards to his or her personal hand instead of two cards. The bets and layout of the community cards are the same as Texas Hold’em. At the showdown, each player's poker hand is the best five-card hand he or she can make from exactly three of the five cards on the board, plus two of his or her own cards. Unlike in a game of Texas hold'em, a player cannot play only one of his cards with four of the cards on the board, neither can he or she play the board, nor play three from his or her hand and two from the board, or any other combination. Each player must play ONLY two of his or her own cards with only three of the board cards.

Omaha poker was created as a high-hand only game, but the high-low split variation called Omaha 8 or better has become so popular that term Omaha generally now refers to that, while the original poker game is usually called Omaha High.

In the game Omaha 8 or better, or Omaha 8, each player makes a five-card high poker hand and five-card ace-to-five low hand, and the pot is split between the high and low hands. To qualify for a low hand, a player has to be able to play a 8-7-6-5-4 hand or lower. There are a few casinos that play with a 9-low qualifier instead, but this is rarely the case. This particular poker game is usually played with a fixed limit.

In the five card game of poker the rules arre pretty basic and go something like this. A very popular home game, the basic draw poker is the game that most people think of when poker is played. Two to eight players can play.

The game begins with each player being dealt five cards, one at a time, all face down. The remaining deck is placed to the side. Players pick up their cards and hold them in their hands, keeping them concealed from the other players. The first round of betting happens at this point, starting with the player sitting on the dealer's left hand side. If more than one player remains after this first round, players then have the option of drawing new cards.

Each player says how many of his or her cards he or she wishes to replace, and discards that many from his or her poker hand. The remaining cards of the deck is then used to deal more cards to each player that requests new cards and, after a burn card which is a card dealt from the top of a deck, and is placed aside unused. Then new cards are dealt to each player in turn and each player is given the same number of cards he or she discarded so that each player has five cards. A second round of betting occurs after the draw phase, followed by a “showdown” if more than one player is still in the game.
