Poker For Beginners
For the sake of simplicity, the basic rules for Texas Hold “em Poker will be the rules used here. The first thing that you have to learn for playingTexas Hold'em poker is which hands are good and which ones should be folded from the start. Even though the answer purely depends on the number of people in the game and the type of game, here is a very basic guide to use when you are just beginning to learn and want to win. A good idea is to start at a fixed limit of $1 or $2, or even lower. Some folks use other items for betting with, such as small candies, matchsticks, or pennies.
When you see a flop, (which is the first 3 cards in Texas Hold ‘em), you will generally be in one of three situations.
One situation is that your hand totally misses the board.
You have nothing, so you should check and fold. Another possibility is to bluff, but this is VERY risky unless you are REALLY good at it. Another situation could be you hit the flop well and hold a strong hand. In this sort of situtation you should most usually either bet or raise.
Another possible situtation is that you have what is known as a drawing hand.
This means that you currently do not hold a strong hand, but it is possible for you to make a strong hand if the turn, or river, brings you a good card. This situation is known as "drawing." If you figure out your chance of hitting a draw, you then multiply that draw by the pot, or bet, to determine the maximum amount of a bet you can call. (For example, if the bet is $10 and the pot is $90, the bet is $100.) For more practice with pot odds, try using a Pot Odds Calculator.
Poker is not just a mathematical game. It is also a game that entails a lot of psychological pressure and luck. Bluffing is one of the methods of psychological “combat” used in poker.
Bluffing is very useful in a no-limit game…more so than in a limited amounts game. In a no-limit game, a player's entire money stash, or stack, is at risk with every hand. In a limit game, players know they can only lose so much. Bluffing is pretty much a useless gambit in a low-stakes limit game. Bluffing becomes a much more needed ruse in a high-stakes game. When you play at a higher limit, it's best to bluff when there are only one or two opponents in the pot.
